VIDÉO

A FISHY BUSINESS is a video installation that continues a body of work about the end of a gathering culture known as fishing. The 2.5 x 3.0 metre screen is composed of 132 small, 20 x 25 cm canvasses, each attached separately to a wooden trellis. On the screen, a video projection shows a jumble of mackerel just pulled from the water. As they take their final gasp, they perform a macabre dance to original music by René Lussier that carries us from the depths of the sea to the savannahs of Africa. The projected image slips through the mini-canvasses creating a new vista of small crosses on the wall, a kind of fish cemetery. Across from the screen, five director chairs gaze passively at the action like so many movie-goers, each chair stamped with maps of the world's oceans or an image of the Bluenose, the champion of cod gatherers on the Grand Banks made famous on the Canadian dime.
