"My grandfather, Eugene, my mother’s father, used to catch lobster around Deadman’s Island. I have only one memory of him: lying down on a table, his eyes closed, his body draped over with a white sheet. Stretched out like that on his back, my grandfather looked like Deadman’s Island, the small, strange and inhospitable island in the Magdalen Islands that became a tomb for so many sailors. This was the first image of death that was printed on my memory as a four-year-old child." With Autopsy of Deadman’s Island, Jean-Yves Vigneau continues his exploration of the maritime landscape and culture, in particular of the concept of island, which for many years has been the focal point of all his horizons.
