UTOPIAE INSULAE FIGURA

Inspired by 16th-century philosopher Thomas More, who created his ideal society of Utopia on an island never laid down in any atlas, I created an image of my own utopian island. Walking along the 20-kilometre tow-path that runs the length of the Chambly Canal between the cities of Chambly and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, I hauled my island like a child pulls a favourite toy. The exhibition in the Action Art Actuel gallery was the fruit of my journey through this maritime landscape, a journey between my island, Thomas More's utopian model, and the contemporary reality of man-made islands which surpasses fiction. The production and public presentation of Utopiae Insulae Figura were supported by the Artist in Residence Program at Action Art Actuel, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
